Meeting Joep Beving at Vivid
We were lucky enough to have the pleasure of hearing the melodic lullabies of Joep Beving during Vivid last night.
Many of Madelines students have been studying his music, particularly his spotify hit ‘Ab Ovo’ which opened the show.
The Utzon room saw a full house of Beving fans, with the ambient backdrop of Sydney Harbour.
Vivid boats passed by throughout the performance, and reflected their illuminating light on the water behind Joep.
It was interesting to hear about Joeps journey through music, and his almost accidental rise to fame through digital streaming.
For his performance, Joep stated he would prefer to string some of the pieces together so as to not break the mood, and let the songs flow into each other.
Between sets, the audience got a personal glimpse into the backstory of some of Joeps pieces, and his inspiration to write.
Joep stands at almost 7 feet tall, with untamed hair and viking-esque beard. Quite a contrast to the images that his music produces!
He would be best described as a gentle giant. It was refreshing to see a musician perform from the heart, and speak honestly and humbly.
Fans had the opportunity to meet with Joep after the show – his autographed album will hang in Madelines Piano room from now on!
We got to briefly talk about ‘Ab Ovo,’ its meaning, and how it’s a favourite piece to study among Madelines students.
